11 May, 2007
PATNA/CHAPRA: Balram Paswan, the domestic help who had kidnapped Ankit on April 12, kept changing his statements on Thursday and said Ankit is still alive and is in the custody of his accomplice Sanjay Razak. Balram had on Wednesday told the police that he had killed Ankit and buried him on the bank of the Saryu river at Chapra. Sources said police have taken Balram on five-day remand for intensive interrogation in the matter. Keeping in mind that he has been retracting from his statements frequently with an intent to mislead police as well as scuttle the police investigations, the special investigation team (SIT) would now crosscheck his statements thoroughly from every angle before jumping to any conclusion. Ankit, a UKG student of St Paul's Academy, Gaighat, was kidnapped just outside his school on April 12. Since then speculations continued about his safe recovery by police. Sources said an SIT team has been conducting raids on the suspected hideouts of Sanjay Razak and Sanjay Baitha, both involved in the abduction of Ankit. Saran SP Sanjay Singh said raids were conducted at Siwan to locate Sanjay Rajak, who is a resident of Daldali Bazar, Chapra. Chapra DSP Mithilesh Kumar said it appeared that somebody had suggested Balram to change his earlier statement that the boy had been killed. Meanwhile, senior RJD leader and former law minister Shakeel Ahmad Khan on Thursday assailed the state police, saying Ankit could not be traced despite the lapse of 28 days. "Police failed to arrest Sanjay Rajak. They are not serious about Ankit's recovery," Khan said.
