NEW DELHI: In an embarrassment for the Congress, RJD on Monday asked the Centre to issue a directive under Article 355 to the Maharashtra government to ensure safety of north Indians. RJD members, who created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha over the Maharashtra government’s reluctance to rein in Raj Thackeray and his chauvinist mob, also demanded immediate arrest of the MNC chief.
This is the fifth time that north Indians are being attacked in Maharashtra by goons of MNS. This is a threat to the country’s unity. Maharashtra CM is quiet. The Centre should intervene immediately, said RJD parliamentary group leader D P Yadav.
With MNS making re-assertion of the Marathi identity, his party’s political plank, the Congress-NCP government has been ducking the demand for firm action against Raj Thackeray. The ruling alliance’s critics say that it is not acting against MNS because it wants to undercut the influence on the Shiv Sena by using Raj Thackeray.
But the issue appears to be causing a huge image deficit for the Congress as the UPA components themselves have been questioning the approach of the Maharashtra government.
While strongly condemning attacks on north Indians in Maharashtra, railway minister Lalu Prasad said the Sunday incident in Mumbai represented a failure of the state government. I strongly condemn the violence and ‘awaragardi’ (hooliganism) by MNS cadres against north Indians and students in the state.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh was more direct in his attack of those controlling levers of power in Mumbai. “The chief minister and the deputy chief minister of the state have proved to be powerless. They just cannot tackle the attacks against north Indians, Mr Singh said.
But all these do not seem to be spurring the Congress to get its state government to act against MNS. The law will take its course against those indulging in violence. The MNS’ politics is unacceptable, the Congress spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Mumbai police on Monday received a non-bailable warrant issued by a Jamshedpur court against Raj Thackeray for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Biharis and said it will be executed this week. The non-bailable warrant issued by a court in Jamshedpur was received by us today but we will execute it during the course of this week, deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Milind Bharambe said.

i support the mns cause against anti-discrimination but i don't support there violent ways. btw, the protesters were not MNS people but common angry marathi speaking people who took the streets today. not raj's gundha's like the TV says. i like to look at the root of the problem and a problem which our north-indian news channels have cunningly ignored to telecast to argue about - unemployment in bihar/UP.
i think a state or any state is only equipped to handle it's own baggage. if there are people coming in then there should be equal people going out. a balance has to be maintained. the administrations of UP and bihar have failed to provide jobs to it's own stock and which is why the stock considers traveling to other states for jobs. the people to blame here is not raj thackray or MNS or north indians... but it's the administration of these two states who are to blame.
but since lallu controls the railway ministry and SP holds the UPA govt. together any actions against them is very unlikely. finally, it also shows the discrimination and vote bank politics played by the UPA govt. the common marathi voice speaks. no it screams.
