Bihar government says yes to paternity leave

Apr 17, 2007,
Patna, April 17 (IANS) The Bihar government has for the first time decided to give its male employees 15 days paternity leave and increased maternity leave from 90 to 135 days.
A formal notification to this effect was issued by the finance department last week. 'Now a government employee can take leave before or after delivery of his child,' an official said.
However, the paternity leave comes with a rider - it will be given to those employees who follow the two-child policy. 'Those with more than two children will not be given leave,' the official said.
Earlier, a committee constituted to suggest the pay structure and service conditions of employees had recommended the introduction of paternity leave and increasing the maternity leave.
The committee submitted its recommendations in 1999 and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs accepted them in August 2000, but had not implemented them so far.
