Bihar Deputy CM goes idea-shopping across Gujarat

Tuesday, April 17, 2007 The state of Bihar is planning to adopt and replicate some of the best practices and development initiatives taken by the state of Gujarat. If talks between the two states succeed, farmers in Bihar will soon see government officials and agri scientists from Gujarat at their doorsteps to assist them in their quest for higher agriculture harvests. The initiative was due to Bihar deputy chief minister, Sushil Kumar Modi’s interest in Gujarat’s Krishi Mahotsav concept.
Interacting with mediapersons at Gandhinagar on his two-day visit to Gujarat, Sushil Kumar Modi said that he was studying the best practices and development initiatives of around 10 government departments of Gujarat and would replicate some of them in Bihar.
Speaking on Gujarat’s Krishi Mahotsav concept, Sushil Kumar Modi said, “The idea of state officials and scientists reaching out to guide and educate farmers appealed to me. There are other initiatives like the Kanya Kelvani scheme which the Bihar government would try to implement”, he said.
In fact, Sushil Kumar Modi has also visited Andhra Pradesh and Haryana to study various aspects of development. He also said that he would also like to implement some of the development initiatives of these states in Bihar.
While reiterating the Bihar chief minister’s claims to turn around Bihar, he said that Bihar, till now, was considered to be the most backward states in the country in terms of all parameters and indicators of development. However, in the past 17 months, the BJP-JDU government in Bihar had initiated tremendous changes in the state.
Before the the BJP-JDU government came to power, there was not a single investment proposal made by any industry in 15 years. With the BJP-JDU in power, investment proposals worth Rs 40,000 crore have been made, of which 20 proposals are for sugar.
The Bihar state cabinet has already cleared the proposals which are under various stages of development. He also pointed out that at one point of time Bihar produced 25% of the total sugar production in country. With 20 projects for sugar alone, Bihar is once again inching towards regaining its lost glory as the main hub of sugar production.
