All work, no leave for PU teachers till May 31

7 Apr, 2007

PATNA: The Patna University (PU) teachers are in a real fix nowadays. Ever since the current examination season of PU commenced on April 3, the teachers are compelled to stay in their respective departments and institutions on all working days for examination and other related works. The university has already notified that they will not be granted any type of leave during the entire period of examination which is likely to continue till May 31. As the PU examinations have been accorded top priority by the authorities concerned, the academic work of other institutions is likely to suffer during the period of examinations, feel PU teachers. For instance, a PU teacher might not be able to conduct PhD viva voce examination in any other university or he may not offer his services for selection of teachers by university service panels outside the city. Many teachers have already refused to accept the work of moderation, interviews and examinations offered by other universities during this self-proclaimed emergency. Many faculty members of PU are in a fix as to how they will be able to attend the marriages of their close relatives to be solemnised during the period outside the city. A few teachers have also postponed the marriages of their sons and daughters to a some other dates after the end of examinations. Ensuring fair exams: At a meeting of college principals held here on Friday under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor YC Simhadri, it was decided to intensify frisking of examinees well before they are allowed to enter the examination halls. Teachers and magistrates on duty have been asked to carry out thorough frisking of examinees. Even if magistrates are not present, teachers alone will do the frisking. Examinees have been warned not to carry any cell phone inside the examination halls. If an examinee is caught with a mobile phone inside the hall, the mobile will be seized and he would be imposed a fine of Rs 500. And, if a student is found using his cell phone inside the examination hall, he would be immediately expelled from the examination. Centre superintendents have been empowered to requisition the services of all teachers, including the heads of post-graduate departments for invigilation duty. They have also been supplied a proforma containing details of the number of examinees, invigilators, magistrates and constables (with their time of arrival and departure). The duly filled in proforma would have to be returned to PU proctor after the end of each day’s examination. A copy of this proforma would also be sent to the Patna DM and the registrar general of Patna High Court. PU hostels: PU VC, along with other officials, visited some hostels of PU, including Law College hostels, PG Hostel, Hathwa Hostel and Ramanujam Hostel at Rani Ghat, on Friday and assessed the situation there. The condition of some hostels was found to be deplorable. The repair of some hostels was undertaken by the public works department recently, but it remained incomplete. PU would write letter to the authorities concerned for immediate completion of the unfinished work. Videography of different hostels was also done, said PU proctor Kriteshwar Prasad.
