This year's third round of a five-day anti-polio drive began on Sunday with an estimated 85,941 vaccinators being engaged to reach out to more than two crore children through a house-to-house strategy unique to Bihar.
This year is being viewed as an extremely important for Bihar in its quest to end transmission of the polio virus.
So far in 2007, the state has reported five out of 11 cases in India (three in Muzaffarpur and two in Madhepura),
Unicef sources said. In 2006, the state reported 61 cases spread over 25 districts. India reported a total of 674 cases, they said.
Keeping the virus trends in mind, the state's 27 districts have been identified as high risk and social mobilisers have been placed there in these districts to support the efforts in increasing support for the drive, Unicef sources added.
