The by-poll to the Islampur assembly seat in Bihar's Nalanda district on Sunday passed off peacefully with 40 to 42 per cent of voters exercising their franchise.
No untoward incident was reported from any of the polling stations in the constituency where a by-election was necessitated due to the election of sitting JD(U) MLA Ram Swaroop Prasad to the Lok Sabha from Nalanda parliamentary constituency a few months back, District Magistrate Anand Kishore said here.
Stating that he had not received any information about Naxalites or locals boycotting polling, Kishore said 14 persons were detained for allegedly creating disturbances during polling at Islampur.
The administration had issued shoot-at-sight orders against booth grabbers in the Naxalite-hit constituency, which saw a contest between six candidates.
The Nalanda parliamentary seat was vacated by Nitish Kumar following his election to the state legislative council on becoming Chief Minister.
While JD(U) fielded Pratima Sinha, widow of a former Congress MLA from Islampur Pankaj Sinha, the UPA backed CPI candidate Rakesh Roshan.
Also in the fray were CPI-ML's Umesh Kumar, JD(U) rebel and independent candidate Bharat Prasad Singh, Yogendra Prasad and Saryug Prasad Sanghasth (both independents).
