Patna, February 23, 2007From the menace of snoring to the alleged American ‘dadagiri’, spiritual Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Friday prescribed antidotes to a wide variety of afflictions bothering the lawmakers of Bihar.
"Try sleeping on your left side instead of right,” he advised a legislator having a snoring problem. To a seemingly flippant query from an MLC troubled by the stress of aggressive US designs towards some countries, Sri Sri’s response was just as serious. “Let’s do dhyan,” he said as he showed a gathering of legislators how to bust stress through breathing exercises.
It was a cosmopolitan gathering of MLAs and MLCs that came face-to-face with the Art of Living founder in the Assembly annexe. Most were keen to learn, some were there out of curiousity and a few skeptics had come for fun. The Guru, who undertook the visit on a request from Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary, had one advice or another for each of them.
For negativism, Sri Sri’s prescription was the yogic sudarshan kriya. “Do it for 30 minutes to restore the harmony of body and thought,” he said. To the gathering at large, he preached spiritualism and pranayam as effective stress busters. He also the taught the legislators the futility of hate and the value of earning respect.
"There was a time when politicians enjoyed as much respect as sadhus and sants. Now the situation is such that when two ministers failed to turn up for our programme in Tamilnadu, the crowd broke into a celebration. There is a need to restore the respect that the political class once enjoyed,” the spiritual Guru said.
Sri Sri recalled that about four years ago, he had invited the warring Maoists and Ranvir Sena activists from central Bihar to his camp in Rishikesh. “On arrival they were literally at each other’s throat. After three days of sudarshan kriya and counseling, the hatchet was buried for good,” he informed the gathering.
The Guru blamed a skewed education system for unemployment. “What we need to do is impart skills after assessing the relative demand for various skills. Again, violence has to be shunned if more jobs are to be created,” he said. His recollection of the AoL’s ‘Youth Leadership Training Programme’ in Karnataka elicited calls for its replication in Jehanabad and Siwan.
Sri Sri also demonstrated how a two-minute eyebrow massage could salve a burning eye and how a three-minute circular massage below the cheekbone could bring down high blood pressure. Practicing yoga with the Guru on stage were the Speaker, Council Acting Chairman Arun Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi and Health Minister Chandra Mohan Rai.
