Lalu gifts Bihar 36,500 km rural roads

Patna: Feb 27, 2009
With the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections expected any time, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad gifted Bihar 36,500 km of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY).
Standing amidst hundreds of shiny black granite plaques detailing projects connecting or to connect 18,369 villages, a beaming RJD supremo laid the foundation stones for 36,500 km of roads in one go.
The finished and yet to be started projects would involve an estimated expenditure of a whopping Rs 16,300 crore.
Lalu removed the huge curtains over the plaques on the both sides of the dais at the sprawling Gandhi Maidan to unveil the Centre's largesse to the state, which he and his wife Rabri Devi ruled for 15 long years before being voted out in the November 2005 assembly polls.
Out of 36,500 km rural roads, altogether 1190 roads in a stretch of 5050 km have been completed at a cost of Rs 2150 crore, the Railway minister said in his address.
"The Centre has pumped in vast funds for a variety of development schemes but unfortunately, the state Government is unable to make full use of these funds. Still, whatever development work you see going on, is courtesy the UPA government," Lalu said.
