PATNA: Patna University (PU) has once again written to the district magistrate of Patna seeking deployment of adequate number of magistrates and police personnel at different centres of the ongoing university examinations so that the examinations may be held strictly according to the provisions of the Bihar Conduct of Examinations Act, 1981 and the directive of Patna High Court. PU examinations of 2007 commenced on April 7 and it has been observed that the number of police personnel and magistrates deployed at different centres is far from satisfactory. While no police personnel turns up at some centres, only one magistrate is deployed to supervise all the nine venues of examination at Patna Science College centre. Consequently, thorough frisking of examinees cannot be undertaken in absence of police and magistrates. PU proctor Kriteshwar Prasad, in his letter to the DM, has also demanded prohibition of loitering of undesirable elements around examination centres. Police and magistrates should reach the examination centre at least one hour before the commencement of examination. He has also asked the centre superintendents to send to the university daily attendance of police and magistrates with the time of their arrival and departure. PUTA decisions: The Patna University Teachers' Association (PUTA), at its executive committee meeting held here under the chairmanship of U K Sinha, decided to extend its full cooperation to Raj Bhawan in its drive to reform the higher education system. However, it clarified that PUTA president and general secretary had not demanded any inquiry against any teacher as was reported in a section of the press. It also decided to meet PU vice-chancellor with a memorandum of demands, including confirmation of services of teachers appointed in 2003, reconsideration of the decision to cancel all types of leave during the entire period of examinations, payment of additional increments to Ph.D degree holders and also arrears of salaries for the strike period. It further decided to resume the publication of "PUTA Samachar” and to hold a national seminar on the role of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in improvement of quality of higher education. World Heritage Week: While celebrating the "World Heritage Week” the students of history department of Patna Women's College organised a workshop here on Wednesday. They presented as many as eight models depicting heritage, ranging from ancient to the modern period. The winning group "Cleopatra” presented the concept of fusion. Addressing the students, college principal Sister Doris D' Souza emphasised the need for preservation and conservation of our rich cultural heritage. Language of advertisement: Addressing the participants of a UGC-sponsored refresher course on "Media and Hindi” organised by the Hindi department of PU here, Delhi University teacher Sudha Singh said the language of advertisement had its own significance hence each word used in an advertisement is selected very carefully. Prem Singh of Delhi University delivered a lecture on "Globalisation and media.”
