PATNA: Valuable documents besides properties worth several lakh of rupees were reduced to ashes when a fire broke out at the main branch of the Bank of Baroda located near the city's Dak Bungalow intersection in the wee hours on Saturday. Though the exact cause of the fire is not known yet, prima facie both police and bank officials said short-circuit could be behind the cause of the fire. The bank's senior manager R K Chatterjee said banking transactions could not take place as almost 14 computers and records were reduced to ashes. However, thanks to Core Banking Solution (CBS) facility installed in the bank, the customers would not face any problem as they can make transactions at the S K Puri branch of the Bank of Baroda, Chatterjee told TOI. Though it is not known when the fire actually broke out, it is suspected that it could have started around 4 am. Eye-witnesses said that when the fire engulfed the eastern-end of the bank, smoke started billowing out from the ventilators that caught the attention of some employees of a nearby petrol-pump who raised the alarm. Some police constables, who were deployed to guard the bank's chest, were in deep in slumber and were not aware of the fire. The petrol pump employees and others rushed to the spot and woke up them up. Later, they informed the fire brigade and bank officials about the blaze, sources said. By 5 am bank officials had reached the spot while three fire tenders were fighting to douse the flame. The DM and SSP had also reached the spot by then and helped to rescue one of the constables who was trapped inside the building.Charred wooden furniture, burnt computers and documents were strewn all around while the officials of an insurance company tried to estimate the extent of the damage when this reporter visited the spot.
