Chief Minister Against Setting up SEZ in Bihar

Patna: April 9, 2007
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, apparently alarmed by the turn of events in Nandigram in West Bengal, on Monday, dismissed any chance of creating Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Bihar saying while the government was determined to move towards overall industrialization, it would not acquire land for the purpose by using any kind of force."We are not in favor of setting up SEZs in Bihar and any land needed for setting up industries will be acquired only after appropriate dialog and agreement with the owners of the land," the Chief Minister said adding he did not want a replay of Nandigram in Bihar.Kumar was talking to the media persons at the weekly Janata Darbar at his residence. The Chief Minister, however, emphasized the need for industrialization saying that in the absence of it, people of Bihar would continue to migrate to other states that would further weaken the state economy.Several opposition leaders, particularly those in the extreme left parties, have threatened to take the government to task if it attempted to acquire private lands for the purpose of setting up industries in the state.
