Bihar to release convicts imprisoned with petty crime

Patna, April 29 (PTI): In a bid to ease the pressure on overcrowded jails, the Bihar Government has decided in principle to release convicts, above 65 years of age, imprisoned for petty crime.
The prison department has prepared a list of convicts and undertrial prisoners at the behest of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who wants old prisoners charged in petty crimes to be released to ease the pressure on crammed jails.
"We have prepared a list of 702 convicted prisoners between the age group of 65 to 80 years. The state government can release them on its own," Inspector General (Prisons) Sandip Poundrik said.
The jail department has also submitted a list of undertrial prisoners aged over 65 years charged with petty crime to the government for being forwarded to the court seeking their release, Poundrik said.
He said out of 56 jails -- six central jails, 26 district jails, 24 sub-jails -- two at Gaya and Udakishunganj were non-functional.
