Witness in Papiya Ghosh Murder Case Turns Hostile

Mar. 23, 2007
Kumar Ranjan, a key police witness in the high-profile murder case of Patna University history professor Papiya Ghosh, on Thursday at the fast track court, changed his account denying he knew anything in the case and he was coerced by the police to sign a piece of paper that turned him into a prosecution witness."I don't know anything about the crime and I was not at the tire shop when the police raided it and allegedly recovered many stolen items from it," Ranjan told the fast track court judge Om Prakash. When reminded he was under oath and making false statements would land him in jail, the fourth witness in the case stuck to his story saying his previous statements were made under duress. The court then declared the state witness hostile at the request of the prosecution.Representing the state, lawyer Jai Prakash Singh then appealed to the court to initiate legal proceedings against the witness on perjury grounds.Papiya Ghosh, a noted historian, was stabbed to death by criminals during an alleged robbery attempt on the night of December 3, 2007.Her live-in maid Malti Devi, an elderly woman, was also killed by the criminals.
