20 Mar, 2007
PATNA: The online railway ticket booking facility has evoked good response. The facility available on the website http://www.irctc.co is being used by those possessing Master/Visa/ Diners Club credit cards. Patna has become the 29th station of Indian Railways where booking of railway reservation tickets through Internet is now available to credit card holders. According to Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) regional manager (RM) Rajesh Rana, Patna is fast picking up in online ticket booking segment. About 60 to 70 tickets are being booked each day from Patna and adjoining areas. This facility got an overwhelming response on March 1 this month before Holi when the number of ticket booking through online system shot up to 57,000 across the country on that day, he said adding on an average about 30,000 to 40,000 rail tickets are being booked online each day all over the country. The IRCTC RM said railways have almost finalised agreement with Bharat Petroleum and several nationalised banks to make available e-ticketing services at select petrol pumps and banks in the town for the convenience of people. Railways have also decided to ensure this service at ATM counters as well. Thus people will not have to wait for long in the queue to procure railway reserved tickets, Rana said. According to Rana, the IRCTC has decided to give full patronage to both e-and i-ticketing system in the larger interest of people living either in metropolitan or in big cities. With the sharp increase in the number of trains and great rush at the railway reservation counters, the IRCTC has decided to introduce e-and i-ticketing system in railways, especially for those who could easily access the rail reservation tickets for any destination, he said. The difference between these two systems is that while e-ticketing can be booked against confirmed berths till the time of preparation of reservation charts on payment of Rs 40 extra on each ticket, i- ticketing is currently made available at 150 stations across the country. Under this system, a sum of Rs 60 is being charged extra per ticket by way of courier charge. This facility is not available in Patna but passengers can book their tickets in advance and delivery of the i-tickets will be made through courier from Delhi, Rana said. According to sources, a passenger can book a maximum of four tickets in a month through online. The IRCTC intends to provide e-ticketing facility at petrol pumps and bank counters in state capital this year, sources said.
