The recovery of over-a-dozen human skulls from a remote Ballia village has revived memories of another Nithari. In December last, many skulls of women and children were found in Nithari, a village in Noida.
Late on Tuesday evening, villagers of Narhi on the UP-Bihar border found skulls on the bank of the Ganga. As the news spread, people of the adjoining villages rushed to the site between Ballia in UP and Buxar in Bihar. Soon, police were informed. Reports said the skulls bore signs of damage.
However, police downplayed the discovery. They said human skulls were found in abundance in the area as a cremation ground was located nearby. "Yes, I also rushed to the spot and saw over six human skulls on the bank of the Ganga on the UP-Bihar border,” Narhi police station officer Som Nath Yadav told HT on the phone. “This is routine in the area,” he said.Ballia superintendent of police Iqramul Haque told Hindustan Times: “One would find many human skulls in the area due to its closeness to the cremation ground in Narhi village.”
He added the skulls were of the poor whose bodies had been abandoned by their families. "Poor villagers cannot afford to cremate the bodies of their loved ones. The bodies are left in the open," the SP said. When asked, the SP said, "No inquiry has been ordered into the recovery of skulls."
