Having established the rule of law in an otherwise lawless state, policemen in Bihar have now turned a new leaf.
These days the men-in-khaki can be seen counselling and coaxing drop-out children to rejoin the school and get basic education. It’s a win-win situation for both the sides.
While children relish the importance of being persuaded by the police to go to school, the policemen too are enjoying their new role of “motivators” which allows them to break out of their stereo-typed image.
A brain-child of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the idea was conceived after he was alarmed over a report which said that around 24 lakh children, in the age group of six to 14 years, do not go to the school in Bihar.
The programme was eventually nicknamed Police chali school ki ore. The campaign, running for the last one month, has yielded rich dividends. In the first month itself, around 20,000 students have been enrolled afresh in different primary schools.
