Sitamarhi: A local CPI-ML (Liberation) leader who complained of chest pain, hundreds of died in judicial custody today after which his supporters attacked the residence of a government official and blocked traffic on a national highway in Bihar's Sitamarhi district.
Superintendent of Police M R Naik said Bikau Sahni, Runnisaidpur block CPI-ML (Liberation) secretary, was arrested in connection with a rape case yesterday. He was shifted to Dumra police station in Sitamarhi town last night where he complained of uneasiness and chest pain and died during treatment at the Sadar hospital this morning.
As the news of his death spread like wild fire, hundreds of his supporters collected in front of the residence of BDO of Runnisaidpur Raj Kumar and attacked it with stones. The officer fled the house, Naik said.
A contingent of Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) comprising ex-servicemen rescued the officer's family members. Though the agitated crowd retreated on the arrival of SAP, they blocked Sitamarhi-Muzaffarpur National Highway 77.
The SP has rushed to the spot with additional reinforcements in view of the prevailing tension. The family and supporters of the deceased leader alleged that Sahni was tortured at Runnisaidpur police station after his arrest and was shifted to Dumra police station when his condition worsened.
The SP, however, rubbished the charge, saying the man was ailing for some time and suffered a heart attack that led to his death.
