Patna, Aug. 2 (PTI): Swollen rivers continued to wreak largescale destruction in 16 Bihar districts affecting over 83 lakh people and claiming 41 human lives, official sources said today.
The Bagmati river breached its embankment near Jathmalpur in worst-hit Darbhanga district and submerged fresh areas in Dholi, Pusa and Kalyanpur blocks in adjoining Samastipur.
Turbulent Kosi demolished its embankment near Pandaul in adjoining Madhubani district bringing fresh tracts under water.
A population of 83.55 lakh face the fury of the deluge in Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Saharsa, East Champaran, Darbhanga, Patna, Supaul, Bhagalpur, West Champaran, Katihar, Madhubani, Samastipur, Sheohar, Nalanda, Khagaria and Gopalganj districts.
In both Darbhanga and Madhubani districts, which are cut off from the rest of the state, the people face an acute shortage of essential commodities like cooking gas, milk, vegetables, diesel and petrol.
The Darbhanga district administration has banned sale of motor fuels without permit from the district supply officer in order to stock petrol and diesel for vehicles to be used for relief operations, sources said.
Thousands of flood victims have taken shelter on the national highway between Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga-Samastipur.
