Probe ordered into Mahavir affairs

11 May, 2007
PATNA: A magisterial probe has been ordered into the affairs of the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan. According to a notification issued by the district administration, the Patna DM has directed an executive magistrate, Dipak Singh, to inquire into the medical lapses and administrative and financial irregularities at the Mahavir Cancer Sansthan. The probe has been ordered following a complaint filed by one Syed Adib Alam of the Bihar Pradesh Muslim Conference. Adib has charged that though Mahavir Cancer Sansthan claimed that poor patients are treated free of cost, a poor woman patient Subhadra was recently left to fend for herself and died at the sansthan for want of money. However, the sansthan director put the onus on the state government, saying the chief minister had assured Subhadra that Rs 40,000 would be given to her for treatment, but it was not given to her. The sansthan got Rs 8 crore from Mahavir Mandir. Besides, it gets huge money from donations, fees procured from patients and government aid for purchasing machines. Yet, patients like Subhadra die at the sansthan for want of money, Alam has alleged. It is unfortunate that a sum of Rs 1 crore was given for purchase of Cobalt machine under the National Cancer Control Programme, but fees are charged from patients for undergoing radio therapy. Sometimes, double amount is charged from the patients in the name of emergency. The sansthan director is responsible for the sordid state of affairs, Alam has alleged.
