JD-U assails Congress for opposing Nitish`s emergency plan

Patna, May 02: Lambasting the Congress for opposing the Bihar NDA government's decision to honour those who laid down their lives or went to jail fighting the emergency, the ruling JD-U today advised the former to contact the RJD if it wanted to fight the decision. "Congress has no significant presence in Bihar and therefore, it can't battle against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's decision to honour those who laid down their lives or went to jail fighting the emergency," JD-U national spokesman Shivanand Tiwari said in a press statement. Bihar Chief Minister had on Monday announced that the state had decided in principle to honour those who laid down their lives or went to jail fighting the emergency. "All political parties, including RJD and the Congress, should welcome the state government's move," Kumar had urged. But the Congress vehemently opposed the decision, saying, "It is a politically motivated step." Tiwari said the contribution of Jayaprakash Narayan between 1974-77 cannot be "undermined or underestimated" as it was for protecting democracy and fundamental rights of citizens and culminated in installation of the first non-Congress government at the Centre. The state government had constituted a four-member committee of ministers headed by Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi to decide the modalities of the "token pension" to the surviving participants of the movement and, in case of their death, their families.
