UP polls, bonanza for Bihar goons

April 06, 2007

Patna: As election reaches a feverish pitch in Uttar Pradesh, goons in Bihar are preparing to cross the border. They are getting ready for the big battle.
“During the last elections too we rendered our services. This time 13 other people are accompanying me. Elections are won by muscle power and anybody coming in our way will not be spared,” says a gangster, Chand Miyan.
The goons of Bihar are offering all kinds of services, right from intimidating voters to booth capturing and even terrorising political opponents. The rate for each such service varies.
“Be it Election Commission or any other group. Our mission is to help win elections. Our charge is Rs 20,000 per day,” says Miyan.
Adds another gangster, Mohammad Wasim, “Most of the shooters are called by the political groups on the other side of border for booth capturing.”
The police however, say that they are aware of the problem.
“We have informed the Election Commission about it. We will ensure free and fair elections from our side. And therefore we are raiding all those who have been convicted under the Arms Act,” says IG, Bihar Police, Anil Sinha.
Who will win this round of the elections in UP is anybody's guess. However, what is known for sure is that muscle power could prove a big factor in many of the constituencies neighbouring Bihar.
