Buxar, April 14. (PTI): At least eight persons, all women and children, were drowned and about 10 others reported missing when a boat overturned in the Ganga river in Bihar's Buxar district today.
The bodies of three women and five children were fished out of the water, officials said.
The accident occurred when the boat was taking about 50 pilgrims to various destinations in Rohtas and Bhojpur districts from Mangala Bhavani temple in Balia district of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh where they had gone to offer prayers on the occasion of 'mesh sankranti'.
About 25 passengers of the ill-fated boat either swam to safety or were rescued by local fishermen, officials said. Of them, 10 were admitted to a local hospital.
Rescue and search operations were being carried out with the help of divers. Giant fishing nets were cast at several places in Buxar and Bhojpur districts along the river's course.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that a compensation of Rs one lakh would be paid to the next of kin of those who died in the mishap.
