Patna, April 19 (IANS) Traders and businessmen in Bihar downed the shutters of their shops Thursday to protest against police failure to recover a six-year-old boy who was allegedly kidnapped last week.
Ankit, a kindergarten student, was abducted from outside St. Paul's School in Gaighat locality April 12. He is the son of a grocery shop owner Manoj Kumar Gope, who also runs a beauty parlour.
Angry over the failure of the police to recover Ankit even eight days after he was abducted, the traders agreed to shut shop following a call made by groups associated with the Vyavasai Sangh of Patna.
'All markets were closed in Patna to protest against the administration's failure to recover Ankit,' a Sangh spokesman said.
Angry crowds, including schoolchildren and teachers, staged protests by shouting slogans against the administration and demanding Ankit's safe recovery. They also burnt effigies of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Nitish Kumar had promised to make Bihar a crime-free state within three months when he came to power in November 2005.
The Bihar Public School and Children Welfare Association has requested Governor R.S. Gavai to intervene to check soaring lawlessness.
Two special police teams sent to Chapra and Muzaffarpur districts in search of the missing boy returned empty-handed Wednesday.
Police say a hunt is on to trace the boy. Four people have been detained for interrogation, Senior Superintendent of Police Kundan Krishnan said.
Police sources said they have zeroed in on a domestic servant, Balram Paswan, who has been missing since Ankit's abduction.
Over 900 people have been abducted across the state in the first three months of 2007.
