Patna • Controversial Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Mohammad Shahabuddin will no longer enjoy special treatment inside jail. The Bihar government has issued orders to stop giving him facilities meant for divisional prisoners, a state prison department official said yesterday.
Official sources said Shahabuddin would now be entitled to amenities given to common prisoners.
"Shahabuddin is no more a VIP prisoner, he is a common prisoner," a senior official of the state home department said of the MP who is currently lodged in the Siwan district jail.
According to official sources, the state government issued an order in this connection on Thursday night. The jail officials have been directed to immediately withdraw all special facilities given to him.
The order was issued after Siwan District Magistrate S K Mall gave a report in which he had held Shahabuddin responsible for the violent clash inside the prison in March between two groups of inmates. Nearly a dozen prisoners were injured in the clash. After that the authorities shifted them to other jails.
Following the order, Shahabuddin will no more get an extra bed, cook, newspapers, magazine and food cooked outside prison.
However, he will continue to get medical facilities as before.
In March, a special court in Siwan awarded two years imprisonment to Shahabuddin for assaulting a Communist Party India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) worker in 1998.
It is for the first time that Shahabuddin has been convicted in a criminal case.
Shahabuddin, MP from Siwan, is facing 34 cases, including those of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and violation of Foreign Exchange Act and Arms Act.
