Sunday, March 18, 2007The National Commission for Women (NCW) will examine the condition of women inmates in Bihar jails following reports of their sad plight.
Official sources in the state prison department said the NCW has approached the state government for a survey on conditions of women prisoners in Bihar.
'The survey will be conducted after the state government promises to provide help for it,' officials said.
The NCW team would visit different jails to meet the women inmates and assess their living, mental and health conditions.
Several women rights bodies and NGOs had reported to the NCW about the sad plight of women inmates.
Taking account of their petitions, NCW member Malini Bhattacharya informed the state government about the proposed survey.
According to official records, there are over 1,100 women inmates in jails.
Most of the women prisoners are under trial and only 80 of them are convicted.
Bihar has 54 prisons - six central jails, 24 district jails and 24 sub-jails housing over 40,000 prisoners against a capacity of only 20,459.
