PANJAB University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) submitted a representation to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Prakash Singh Badal, while he was in the varsity to attend the annual academic function today. The representation states that teachers’ of the faculty have been demanding raise in retirement age from 60 to 62 years, that was recommended by UGC in its 1998 notification. While, the recommendation of UGC has already been implemented in all the central and the state universities of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttranchal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar the same has not been done for PU.
The representation further states that the university teachers usually enter into service late, as they are required to put in more years for attaining higher qualifications like MPhil or PhD.
Members of the association said that this was also brought to the notice of the previous Punjab government, but nothing concrete emerged. Now, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi, has issued a notification that all the centrally funded universities may enhance the retirement age to 65. But in PU, this has not even raised to 62. The Syndicate and Senate of Panjab University have already recommended the retirement age of university teachers to be raised to 62.
