Police complaint against Bihar Legislator

30 Mar, 2007
PATNA: Police in Bihar have filed a complaint against ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) legislator Pradeep Singh for allegedly beating and threatening to kill a retired government teacher.
Manager Prasad, who taught at a college in West Champaran's Bettiah, about 250 km from here, said in his written complaint that he was at his home in Siswania village with his wife when Singh and his brother assaulted them. They also threatened they would kill the couple if they did not hand over their land. "We feared a threat to our life by Singh because he was eying our land," the schoolteacher said. Besides Pradeep Singh, who represents the border constituency of Lauria in the assembly, four others, including his father and brother, have been made accused in the case. The legislator has denied the charges against him and said it was a conspiracy to malign his image. Earlier this week, a police complaint was lodged against another JD-U legislator Gopal Mandal, who had allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman and abused her. Complaints against Mandal, a legislator from Gopalpur assembly seat, were earlier lodged for threatening a police official, demanding extortion and for occupying a government guesthouse illegally. Other ruling party MLAs are in trouble too. Sunil Pandey is in Patna's Beur jail in connection with a case of extortion as is Ranvijay Singh, who is accused of murder.
