Papiya killing: School manager deposes for prosecution

PATNA: The trial in the infamous Prof Papiya Ghosh killing case continued for the fifth day on Saturday with a school manager deposing in a local court in favour of the prosecution. The Patna University professor along with her sexagenarian maid was found murdered in her sprawling house in posh Patliputra Colony here on December 2-3 night last year. Bijendra Tiwary, manager of a play school situated in the neighbourhood, told the Fast Track Court-5 that when he reached Ghosh's residence around 10 am on December 3, he saw her dead body lying on the floor near the bed in her bedroom. He said a police officer prepared the inquest report and he put his signature on it. He further said he also saw the dead body of Ghosh's maid, Malti Devi, in the kitchen. He signed the inquest report of Malti's dead body too. In course of cross-examination, Tiwary said there were four injury marks on Ghosh's body. She was wearing a gown and blood was not oozing out of her wounds when he saw the body. The court fixed March 26 as the next date of hearing. Flood-relief scam: The court of special vigilance judge here on Saturday took cognizance against former Patna DM Gautam Goswami under Prevention of Corruption Act in the multi-crore flood-relief scam case. This followed the submission of sanction for his prosecution in the court by the state vigilance bureau which probed the scam. Earlier, the court had taken cognizance against him under different Sections of Indian Penal Code. Many of the accused, including Goswami and RJD MP Sadhu Yadav, were present in the court. The court fixed April 24 as the date for supply of police papers to the accused. Judicial custody: The court of special vigilance judge on Saturday forwarded Barhat (Banka) block education extension officer Kamleshwari Prasad and Haveli Kharagpur junior engineer Panchanand Singh to judicial custody till April 5. Prasad and Singh were arrested by the state vigilance bureau while taking bribes.
