Noose tightens around Bihar MP in murder case

Wed, 14 Mar 2007
The long arm of law is catching up with Bihar's Janata Dal-United (JD-U) MP Prabhunath Singh after the Patna High Court ordered transfer of his trial in a murder case from a Bhagalpur court to the sessions court here to complete the trial in three months.
A division bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice Samrendra Pratap Singh directed the fast track Patna sessions court to complete the trial within three months, a court official said Wednesday.
Besides, the case of murder during the 1995 Assembly polls, Singh is also an accused in a case of kidnapping.
After Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MPs Mohammad Shahabuddin and Pappu Yadav, it is now the turn of Singh to face the law.
Two Bihar leaders, Shahabuddin, who is an MP from Siwan, and Paapu Yadav, a MP from Madhepura, are lodged in Siwan jail in Bihar and Tihar jail in New Delhi respectively. Both face dozens of criminal cases, including murder, kidnapping, extortion and loot.
The court order on Singh's trial came during hearing of a habeas corpus petition filed by Harendra Rai in connection with kidnapping of Lal Muni Devi, a witness in the murder of her son Rajendra Rai.
The high court cancelled the judgement of the Bhagalpur sessions court in this case and directed the Bihar State Bar Council to inquire into the role of public prosecutor in this case and take action against him.
The bench also directed prosecution to record Lal Muni Devi's statements afresh in the case after it scrapped the evidence recorded by Lal Muni in the Bhagalpur court. The court stated that the earlier statement of her was allegedly recorded under pressure and threat from Singh.
Girija Devi, wife of Lal Muni's another son Harendra Rai, had Oct 24, 2006, filed a complaint with Papanpur police station in Saran district alleging that her mother-in-law was abducted by the associates of Prabhunath Singh to influence the trial of the case.
Last year Additional Director-General of Police D.N. Gautam was directed by the court to probe into the allegations against Singh in the case. In an interim report submitted before the court, Gautam expressed his displeasure at an earlier police investigation.
Gautam was reportedly removed from the case earlier by the state government under pressure from the JD-U MP. But when the issue came to the notice of the court, it ordered the official to submit the interim report.
Prabhunath Singh represents Maharajganj in parliament and is a deputy leader of JD-U parliamentary party. He faces over two dozen criminal charges, including murder, kidnapping and extortion.
