: Two persons were killed and another injured at Begusarau in Bihar today when police opened fire to quell a violent crowd protesting against alleged irregularities during the distribution of BPL coupons.
The incident took place around 11.30 pm at the Matihani block campus about 140 km from the capital where nearly 200 people from over 50 villages had gathered to stage a demonstration against the non-registration of over a dozen “valid” families under the BPL list.
Disho Jha (60), a resident of Chak Punarwas village, and Baleshwar Sahu (58), a resident of Kharebi village, who were at the forefront of the protests, succumbed on the spot to police firing. The policemen also beat up another protester, Neelam Devi, a resident of Rajpur village.
The protestors took umbrage at the police beating a woman, who was “denied” BPL registration, and tried to barge into the police station on the block office campus itself.
When police tried to stop them through barricading, the protesters started pelting stones at them. Unable to control the crowd with lathicharge, the police first fired six rounds in the air and subsequently opened fire on the people.
A livid crowd then burnt some two-wheelers parked near the campus and later blocked the Matiyani-Begusarai road with the dead bodies demanding immediate dismissal of the guilty policemen.
Matihani block development officer Santosh Kumar, Begusarai superintendent of police Amit Lodha and district magistrate Sanjiv Hans reached the spot to pacify the crowd. Chief minister Nitish Kumar, who was apprised of the unrest during Assembly proceedings, said a thorough inquiry will be done to ensure that the guilty are punished.
