Brutal murder whips up tension in Muzaffarpur

7 Mar, 2007
MUZAFFARPUR: Due to the timely intervention by the district administration, police and some elderly persons, Muzaffarpur succeeded in maintaining its record of never witnessing any communal riot even amidst intense provocations in Mehdi Hassan Chowk area on Wednesday morning, after the brutal murder of a poor rickshaw puller, Salim alias Bhattal (35). The recovery of Salim's body evoked anger and hatred amongst the members of a community of Mehdi Hassan Chowk, Road Number 6 of Juran Chapra and Gafoor Basti here on Wednesday morning and groups of agitated youths blocked the road connecting Bairiya bus stand with this town. They also started chasing, beating up and pelting stones at the passersby. The situation would have turned worse had not DM Vinay Kumar and SP Ratn Sanjay rushed to the spot with riot van and police force from the Brahmapura and the Town police stations immediately. The body of the slain rickshaw puller had the marks of more than a dozen stab injuries on his chest and abdomen, his throat slit with a sharp weapon and the veins of both his legs above heels had been cut open. Reference to the name of ward councillor Hari Om in connection with the incident fuelled the tension. The reality was that some mohalla people told the agitated youths that the ward councillor of the area must come to the spot of murder. Then the mob gathered before Om's house. Om thought the mob was going to attack his house hence took out his gun and pointed it towards the mob. This reversed the situation and he became the target of the mob fury. However, the DM and SP pacified and even persuaded the mob to allow the body to be taken for autopsy. After handing over the body at the autopsy house at SKMCH, the DM and the SP later told TOI at the Brahmapura police station that the widow, Rehan Khatoon, and five children of Salim had been given a special grant of Rs 50,000, Rs 10,000 as family benefit and adequate food grains, clothes and utensils for their rehabilitation. On the statement of the widow, an FIR has been registered with the Brahmapura police station against an unknown middle-aged person. The SP assured that the assailant would be nabbed soon as the widow may recognise the middle-aged person who had taken Salim with himself on Tuesday night from his house. However, according to police sources, Salim had a criminal background and he was wanted in at least 10 cases of loot and dacoity in Brahmapura and Muzaffarpur GRP areas. The police may also try to investigate whether the murder was committed during the distribution of booty. The police have ruled out the involvement of Dr P Ojha in the case. The trail of blood from victim's body was found outside the closed house of Dr Ojha, who is presently in Patna.
