Patna • The Bihar government has decided to expedite the trial of half a dozen old criminal cases, including of murder, against Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP Surajbhan Singh who is known to be close to union Steel Minister and party chief Ram Vilas Paswan. The government has appointed a special public prosecutor for the speedy trial of the criminal cases, official sources said.
Bihar Home Secretary Afzal Amnanullah confirmed that old criminal cases of the Ballia MP would be taken up for speedy trial. "It was a government decision to hold speedy trial of all old criminal cases against Singh," Amanullah said. Surajbhan Singh faces charges of murder, extortion and other criminal activities - all between 1992-96 - in Begusarai district's Barauni police station, Town police station, Tehra police station and Phulwaria police station.
The government will file a petition in the Patna High Court to shift the cases from a fast track court in Begusarai to a court in Patna.
In January this year, the Begusarai fast track court had issued a warrant against Surajbhan Singh for his alleged involvement in the murder of one Rami Singh. He later surrendered to the court and got bail.
After Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammad Sahahabuddin, Pappu Yadav and Janata Dal-United MP Prabhunath Singh, it is now the turn of Surajbhan Singh to face the heat.
Singh is also allegedly involved in a double murder - of RJD leaders Akhilesh Rai and Ram Udesh Rai. The Samastipur Superintendent of Police S. Akhtar mentioned in his supervision report last month about the MP's involvement in the murders on April 13, 2006.
