Bihar orders security review for legislators, MPs after Mahato killing

High alert has been sounded in the state in the wake of the killing of JMM MP Sunil Mahto by Naxals, after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar convened a high-level meeting of top officials, including the Home Secretary and DGP, to review the situation.The chief minister directed the Home secretary and DGP to tighten security measures in the state and ensure that all legislators from Bihar were given adequate security. Condemning the incident, Kumar said that the issues for which the Naxals take recourse to violence could easily be resolved through talks. "Violence is resorted to with an intention to disturb peace and communal harmony," he said.Following the CM's directive, DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha asked the entire district police administration to remain vigilant and intensify night patrolling in their respective areas. Security has been beefed up at railway stations, airport, bus stands, high-rise buildings, State Assembly and Secretariat till further orders, Sinha said adding "all leads and threats that have anything to do with extremist outfits has to be dealt with priority and the SPs have been asked to keep the police headquarters posted." Sinha said that the status of VIP security, including those of MPs, ministers and legislators, would be reviewed.
