Patna, March 23 (IANS) A lawyer in Bihar has filed a legal complaint against opposition members who have been boycotting the ongoing budget session of the state assembly for the last 12 days.
Shruti Singh's complaint filed in the Patna High Court contends that the legislators were being paid from the taxpayers' money and if they failed to show up in the assembly for a long period of time, their salaries should be withheld.
"They are paid to work for the people, not to boycott the assembly for such a long time, a record in itself in the parliamentary history of state," Singh said Friday.
The opposition members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, Lok Janshakti Party, Communist Party of Inda-Marxist-Leninist, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India-Marxist are boycotting the assembly for the withdrawal of a censure motion against them.
Singh's petition, filed Thursday, said the legislators, who enjoy high salaries and attractive perks at the taxpayers' expense, visit the state assembly, sign a register, shout some slogans and return home without putting in any work for the people of the state.
"Under these circumstances, it is hoped that they should not be paid a single paisa as the people of Bihar are being defrauded by such leaders," her petition said.
Leader of the opposition Rabri Devi has ruled out any compromise over the demand for withdrawal of the censure motion passed against the opposition. The opposition plans to meet the governor Monday to apprise him of the "high-handedness" of the National Democratic Alliance government.
Rabri Devi Wednesday questioned the legality of the censure motion against the opposition members and described it as unconstitutional. She said, as per rule numbers 29(5), 33(3 and 7), and 63, the ruling party cannot pass a censure motion against the opposition.
