PATNA: The 24-hour bandh call given by CPI (Maoists) on Tuesday in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal to protest the recent firing in Nandigram affected movement of trains, particularly on the Grand Chord section of the Dhanbad and Mughalsarai divisions under the East Central Railway (ECR). No major incident was reported till Tuesday evening from any part of the ECR. The railways had deployed armed forces at each vulnerable station, especially in the Dhanbad and Mughalsarai divisions of the ECR. According to Danapur DRM Pankaj Jain, the railways had stepped up security measures since Monday night, particularly on the Naxal-affected Patna-Gaya (PG) section of the Danapur division. The railways also introduced a round-the-clock emergency cell in the Danapur control room to monitor the movement of trains, Jain said. The railways cancelled 16 pairs of passenger trains and diverted the routes of about over a dozen long-distance trains in view of the bandh call. Passengers sought refunds against their tickets at different stations under the ECR. The railways had to suffer a huge loss of revenue due to cancellation of long-distance trains originating from Howrah, Dhanbad and Mughalsarai. The important mail and express trains which were cancelled by the railways on Tuesday included Patna-Palamu Express (3347-3348), Garhwa Road-Singrauli Link Express (3347 A), Chaupan-Shatinagar Triveni Express (4369-4370), Gomoh-Shaktinagar (619), Gomoh-Barkakana (625), Barkakana-Mughalsarai (627), Barbadih-Dehri-on-Sone (737), Barbadih-Chunar (623) and several other passenger trains which pass through the Naxal-infested areas. The railways also diverted the routes of Howrah-Jabalpur Express via Gomoh-Mughalsarai, Ranchi-Varanasi Express via Rajbera-Gomoh-Mughalsarai, Tata-Jammu Tavi Express via Gomoh-Mughalsarai, Varanasi-Ranchi Express and Hatia-Delhi Express via Gomoh. Several passenger trains were controlled at safe stations from where they would be allowed to carry on their onward journey on Tuesday midnight. According to superintendent of railway police (SRP), Patna, Ajitabh Kumar, the GRP had been deployed at every vital point on the Naxal routes, particularly on the Grand Chord and PG sections of the ECR. Strike forces were kept as reserve at each vulnerable point, the SRP said, adding that police stations falling under the jurisdiction of every railway station had been put on alert to safeguard railway stations and vital installations. The SRP maintained that homeguard jawans had also been deployed to keep a watch on railway tracks. Danapur RPF commandant Rajendra Rupnawar said that the railways had deployed both the RPF and RPSF, particularly at Jehanabad, Kiul and Patna, to carry out a thorough search in the long-distance trains, especially night trains, passing through these stations.
