Jamshedpur, Feb. 12: Players are working hard to make the state proud in yet another sport and this time it is tennikoit.
Surprising as it may sound, tennikoit, which is similar to badminton, is making a headway into the state. The Jharkhand Tennikoit Association (JTA), formed three years ago, are working hard to make the sport popular here.
Tennikoit is a game of quick reactions. One needs to have a good arm, as the tennikoit or the ring has to be thrown from one side of the court to another and points are won if the opponents drop the ring.
JTA officials maintained that they have sent teams to national-level events, without much success. During the erstwhile Bihar days, the team was a regular, but the state has not been participating in the nationals for sometime.
JTA president S.R.A. Rizvi Chabban said the sport has to be treated from the grassroots-level in the state. “We plan to hold the East Zone Tennikoit Championship in the city from February 16 to 18. As of now, three teams — Bihar, Bengal and Orissa — have confirmed their participation,” said Rizvi. Being a new sport, the event would help create an impression about the game among the masses. This would further encourage others to be involved in the game.
“We want to improve our performance in the nationals and for that we need more players and better training facilities,” said Rizvi.
Officials maintained that the Tennikoit World Cup was held last year in Madras. “The players down south are adept in the game and also have government support. We neither have any such support nor the infrastructure,” said an official.
JTA general secretary Ali Raza Khan, who is a professional player, said: “We are thinking of hiring coaches and experts from the south Indian states.”
The organisation plans to expand their base to other cities of Jharkhand as well.
